When undergoing various dental procedures, our dentist will administer a local anesthetic before beginning treatment. This local anesthetic helps alleviate pain in part or all of your mouth and may be used in conjunction with sedation dentistry to provide a more comfortable overall experience. Prior to receiving an anesthetic, we recommend discussing any allergies or medications, including herbal supplements, vitamins, and over-the-counter drugs, with our dentist and team to ensure your safety.
Local anesthetics are typically injected into specific areas, usually via a needle into your gum or inner cheek. Before the injection, our dentist will dry part of your mouth and apply a numbing gel to the area for added comfort. While some patients may not feel the injection needle, others may experience a mild “sting” as the anesthetic penetrates the oral tissues.

The effects of local anesthesia typically last for several hours, during this time, you may experience difficulty chewing or speaking clearly. It’s crucial to be cautious when chewing to avoid inadvertently biting the numb area. This precaution is especially important for children, as they may chew or play with the numbed areas without awareness, potentially causing harm.
